Applied Optoelectronics Announces Datacenter Interconnect Laser

March 29, 2016

SUGAR LAND, Texas, March 29, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Applied Optoelectronics, Inc. (NASDAQ:AAOI), a leading provider of fiber-optic access network products for the internet datacenter, cable broadband, and fiber-to-the-home markets, announces availability of a new laser for the datacenter interconnect market.

AOI's new laser for the datacenter interconnect market when used with a silicon photonics optical engine is able to transmit data at 100 Gbps or up to 200 Gbps using PAM4 modulation. Lasers for both dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) are available.

Designed to complement external silicon-based modulators this new laser has higher output power and other features to extend the transmission distance to 80km and greater. These longer interconnect distances are often required when connecting datacenter buildings together into a single hyper-scale "virtual datacenter."

"AOI is a market leader in 100Gbps optical technologies for intra-datacenter applications where the majority of optical transceivers are utilized and transmission distances are 2km or less. Our new laser for extended transmission distance expands our addressable market to include datacenter interconnects, making us a leading provider of datacenter optics across the entire distance range required by a typical hyper-scale datacenter operator," said Dr. Fred Chang, AOI's Senior VP for Optical Components.

The laser is manufactured using AOI's proprietary fabrication processes at its fab near Houston. The product began shipping late in 2015 and is currently shipping in volume.
